Why Remove Excel Metadata?
Spreadsheets are shared constantly - with clients, regulators, journalists, and the public - and they quietly carry more than the numbers in the cells. The document properties record who wrote the file, who last saved it, the company name, and even the exact folder path on the author's computer. For sensitive workbooks, that hidden trail can reveal names, internal projects, and directory structures you never meant to publish.
What Gets Removed
- Core properties - author, last-modified-by, title, subject, description, keywords, category, and status.
- Extended properties - company and manager.
- Custom properties - any extra fields added by templates, add-ins, or classification tools.
- Saved file path - the absolute path Excel stores for the last save location.
Created and modified timestamps and the originating application name are kept so the file still validates and opens without warnings.
