How to Convert a CSV to QBO

  1. Export the transactions from your bank as CSV. In online banking, open the account, choose Download or Export, and pick CSV (some banks call it "Spreadsheet" or "Comma delimited"). An Excel file you have tidied by hand works too.
  2. Drop the file above. The header row, the columns and the bank are detected. Check the mapping: one Amount column, or a Debit and a Credit column.
  3. Check the dates and signs in the preview. Money out should be red and negative. If a card export shows charges in green, tick the flip-signs box. If January 3rd shows as March 1st, switch the date order.
  4. Choose the account type and download the .qbo file, then import it into QuickBooks as described below.

Import the QBO File into QuickBooks Desktop

  1. Back up first: File > Back Up Company > Create Local Backup. An import cannot be undone in one step.
  2. Go to File > Utilities > Import > Web Connect Files and open the .qbo file.
  3. In the Select Bank Account window choose Use an existing QuickBooks account and pick the bank or card account (or create a new one). QuickBooks remembers this link for the account number in the file.
  4. Open Banking > Bank Feeds > Bank Feeds Center, select the account and choose Transaction List to match, categorise and add the transactions.

Upload to QuickBooks Online

  1. Go to Transactions > Bank transactions (called Banking in some versions).
  2. Click the arrow next to Link account and choose Upload from file.
  3. Drop the .qbo file (or the QuickBooks Online CSV) and click Continue.
  4. Pick the QuickBooks account to put the transactions in, then review them on the For review tab.

QuickBooks Online caps a manual upload at roughly 350 KB. A year of busy business banking can pass that; split the export by date range and convert each part, or use the QuickBooks Online CSV download, which is smaller for the same transactions.

Import into Quicken (QFX)

Choose Quicken (.qfx) as the format. In Quicken for Windows use File > File Import > Web Connect (.QFX) File; on a Mac use File > Import > Bank or Brokerage File (OFX, QFX). Quicken asks which account to add the transactions to. Quicken checks the bank ID against its own list of participating banks in the same way QuickBooks does, so the same bank-ID advice applies.

The Bank ID, and "QuickBooks Can't Verify the Bank"

A .qbo file is an OFX bank statement with one Intuit addition: the INTU.BID tag, the ID of the bank that issued it. QuickBooks Desktop refuses a file whose ID is not on Intuit's list of Web Connect banks with the message "QuickBooks is unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download." No converter can make your bank appear on that list, so this one writes 3000 - Wells Fargo's ID, which every current QuickBooks Desktop release accepts and which converters use by convention.

Be clear about what that means: QuickBooks may show "Wells Fargo" on the import screen and may ask you to choose or create the account, but the transactions land in whichever account you pick. Nothing is sent to Wells Fargo or anyone else. If you have a .qbo file downloaded from your own bank, open it in a text editor, copy the number after <INTU.BID> and paste it into the Bank ID field to have QuickBooks show your bank's name.

Fixing Common Import Errors

"Unable to verify the Financial Institution information"

The bank ID was rejected. Put 3000 back in the Bank ID field and convert again. If it still fails, your QuickBooks Desktop version may be past Intuit's discontinuation date - Intuit stops online banking services, Web Connect included, for releases about three years old. Update QuickBooks, or use the CSV to IIF converter, which does not depend on online services.

Dates in the wrong month

A CSV dated 03/04/2026 is March 4 in the US and 3 April almost everywhere else. The converter decides from the file itself - one date with a day above 12 settles it - and otherwise assumes the US order. If the preview shows the wrong month, switch Numeric dates are to the other order. The .qbo file stores dates as YYYYMMDD, so once the preview is right QuickBooks cannot misread them.

Duplicate or missing transactions

QuickBooks decides what it has already imported by FITID, the transaction ID in the file. A converter that numbers rows 1, 2, 3 gives January's first transaction and February's first transaction the same ID, and QuickBooks silently drops the second. Here each ID is a hash of the date, amount and description, so it is the same every time the same transaction is converted and different for every other transaction. If your bank's CSV has its own transaction ID or reference column, map it to Transaction ID (FITID) and the bank's IDs are used instead.

Deposits showing as payments (or the reverse)

QuickBooks needs money out as a negative amount. Checking exports nearly always do this already. Card exports differ: Chase and Bank of America print charges as negatives, American Express and Discover print them as positives. Tick the flip-signs box for the second kind, and set the account type to Credit card so QuickBooks files them correctly.

Amounts read as text or as zero

Amounts such as $1,234.56, (42.50), 42.50-, -$42.50 and 42.50 DR are all read correctly. Rows the converter cannot read are listed under the totals rather than silently dropped; a Total or Balance line at the bottom of the export usually appears there, which is expected.

Why the File Is Not Uploaded

Most CSV-to-QBO converters are desktop programs or upload services. This one is a web page that does the work on your computer: the CSV is parsed by JavaScript in the browser tab and the .qbo file is generated there, so your account numbers and transactions never leave the machine. There is no account to create and no per-file fee, and once the page has loaded it keeps working with the network switched off.
